Delta del Po

The Mesola Woods and Deer Ecomuseum is part of the Po Delta Regional Park. A visit is a must mainly because of the curiosity aroused by the imposing Castello Estense (Este Castle), which emerges from the flat landscape; from here, you can enter the Bosco di Santa Giustina (Santa Giustina Wood), the last remaining part of the hunting reserve within the Este walls. A little further on is the Torre Abate Oasis and the Fondo pine forest where the "furtin", witnesses to the Second World War, can be found. In a short time, it is possible to reach the Great Mesola Wood, the northernmost Mediterranean scrubland in Europe, inhabited by the native dune deer, which cohabits with fallow deer and turtles, woodpeckers and birds of prey, holm oaks, white poplars and ash trees. Crossing the Via Romea, we come to the Dune di Massenzatica (Massenzatica Dunes), a formation of great geological interest, a remnant of the ancient Etruscan coastline covering about 50 hectares and, in part, a WWF oasis. Leaving the Dunes, we visit a small church dating back to 1200, of which part of the walls and the beautiful bell tower surmounted by a perfect pyramid remain.
