Delta del Po

At the end of the 19th century, more than 12,000 hectares of entirely submerged brackish water valleys were drained and subsequently cultivated thanks to the design and construction of a powerful water-scooping plant and a vast network of canals. The Marozzo water-scooping plant powered by steam engines that, thanks to large slap wheels, could lift and discharge all the water coming from the valleys into the Po di Volano river. Over time, the plant underwent various transformations, both to adapt its technology and to cope with the natural and progressive compaction of the land resulting from its draining. After 115 years of uninterrupted activity, in 1986, the 19th-century plant was replaced by a new water-scooping machine, designed according to state-of-the-art criteria. The Casa della Memoria (House of Memories) summarises more than a century of Ferrara's land reclamation and recovers the sense of belonging and respect for a land conquered and defended metre by metre and that nowadays is successfully productive.
