CYCLING IN THE PO DELTA: THE JOY OF CYCLING AMIDST NATURE, HISTORY AND BOUNDLESS LANDSCAPES
There is a place where cycling seems to have been invented especially for it. A completely flat landscape, criss-crossed by embankments, back roads, cycle paths and routes surrounded by nature, where every ride becomes an opportunity to slow down and take in the scenery. That place is the Po Delta.
Here, cycle tourism is not simply an outdoor activity, but a genuine way of travelling. The extraordinary variety of landscapes means that, within just a few kilometres, you can pass from the Comacchio Valleys to the pine forests of Ravenna, from the Ferrara countryside to the salt pans of Cervia, along routes that wind between water and land in one of Europe’s most fascinating regions.
There’s something for everyone. Families can choose short, safe routes, whilst more experienced cyclists can tackle multi-day itineraries that allow them to discover the Delta in its entirety. Among the most picturesque routes are the Destra Po, which follows the Great River for its final hundred kilometres towards the sea, the Adriatic Cycle Route, the Salt Route and the Comacchio Valleys Loop, one of the region’s most iconic itineraries.
The Bike&Boat experiences are also particularly fascinating, combining boating and cycling in a single itinerary. Routes such as the one along the Po di Volano or through the Comacchio Valleys allow you to experience the Delta from different perspectives, passing through landscapes where water takes centre stage.
A packed calendar of events for cycling enthusiasts helps to make the experience even more special. Among the most popular events is “Cycling with the Flamingos at Sunset”, which takes participants into the heart of the Southern Valleys of Comacchio, amidst lakes, tranquillity and colonies of pink flamingos bathed in the light of the setting sun. Initiatives such as “L’Argine degli Angeli”, “PedaliAmo la natura”, “Salina, Bici e Birdwatching” and e-bike tours along the Via Romea Germanica are also attracting great interest – experiences that combine physical activity, nature observation and the discovery of the Delta’s cultural heritage.
For those wishing to immerse themselves fully in the area, the new “In bici tra Valli e Delizie” route is the ideal choice. The route connects Ferrara, Argenta, Ostellato, Portomaggiore and Comacchio on a journey that weaves together watery landscapes, the ‘Delizie Estensi’ and small villages, offering an authentic insight into the Po Delta.
Cycling through the Delta means experiencing the area at a leisurely pace, listening to the sounds of nature, observing the birds that inhabit the wetlands, passing through places steeped in history and being captivated by ever-changing views. An authentic experience that allows you to connect with the very soul of this extraordinary land, where land meets water.
